Our Initiatives
These are the Eco Heroes who don’t wear masks or capes; they neither fly nor have superpowers. But they are brave, generous, tireless… Some are famous, others are anonymous heroes and almost go unnoticed.
That’s how Eco Heroes are and that’s how you are.
NO POVERTY
This story is inspired by Wangari Maathai, known by many as the “Tree Woman”.
She had a vastly different life from other African girls of her generation. Wangari Maathai was lucky enough to study, go to school, learn languages, have books and magazines at her fingertips, live in other countries and share experiences with people from different cultures. All this made her a strong woman, ready to fight against the injustice and mistreatment suffered by the majority of her people.

ZERO HUNGER
This story is inspired by Muhammad Yunus, known to many as the “Banker to the Poor”. His father was a goldsmith and, despite having nine children, he was able to give them all a good education. He says that he was most inspired by his mother, who ensured that he was always aware of those in need, instilling in him the idea of never being indifferent to the pain of others.
Muhammad Yunus implemented an innovative scheme to provide microcredits to help the needy.

GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
This story is about Elisabeth Eidenbenz, a slight woman just five feet tall who never wanted to be a hero but who ended up one anyway. The young Swiss teacher arrived in Spain in 1937 with the intention of teaching children, but the brutality of the civil war led her to change her plans. She helped more than 100 Spaniards move to the south of France, where they were interned in refugee camps. After witnessing the wretched conditions and neglect that pregnant women and babies faced, she secured the necessary permits and aid to open the Elna Maternity Hospital, where she cared for any woman in need. Through her dedication and tireless work, she managed to save the lives of almost 600 babies.

QUALITY EDUCATION
This story is about Maria Montessori, the creator of the totally innovative pedagogical movement named in her honour. It was started in Italy and eventually made its way across the globe. Her method underscores the ability of children aged six and under to acquire knowledge with incredible ease. Maria Montessori was also the founder of La Casa dei Bambini (The Children’s House), where she opened her arms to poor children so they could study, develop their creativity, and learn to how to interact with others. Here, children were not separated by gender.

GENDER EQUALITY
This story is inspired by Isabel Allende, considered the world’s most-read living female Spanish-language author. Together with her literary endeavours, for many years she has been working in society to defend equality between men and women. She defines herself as a feminist, and she aspires for everyone to have the same opportunities to grow equally and develop their talent.

CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION
This story is inspired by Rajendra Singh, known as “the water man of India”. He is an Indian environmentalist and water conservationist who is the eldest of seven siblings. He inherited his love of the land from his father, who was a farmer. From a very young age, he felt drawn to social issues and to caring for and defending small villages.
He runs an NGO called Tarun Bharat Sangh, which was founded in 1975. It is known for its research in ecology and land development, which aims to provide drinking water to the Indian population.

AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
This story is inspired by Greta Thunberg, born in Stockholm (Sweden) on 3rd January 2003. She is an environmental activist, concerned about global warming. She is known for her direct, confident way of talking in front of crowds and political leaders. She invites everyone to act immediately so that, between us all, we can find solutions for the climate crisis wreaking so much havoc. She never tires of repeating over and over that politicians should be humbler and more sensible and should listen
to scientists.

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
This story is inspired by Nelson Mandela, a famous South African leader. He was born in Mvezo on the 18th of July, 1918, and died at the age of 95 in Johannesburg on the 5th of December, 2013. He was a lawyer, an apartheid activist, and the president of his country’s government from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black man to lead the government’s executive branch and the first to be elected by popular vote. His governance was dedicated to combatting poverty, social inequality, and racism.

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
This story is inspired by Katherine Johnson (née Coleman), born on 26th August 1918 in West Virginia (USA). She was the youngest of four siblings and her passion for maths was clear from a very young age. Her parents considered their children’s education very important, so they didn’t hesitate to make the necessary sacrifices to allow them to continue their studies.
Throughout her career, she earned the reputation of mastering complex mental calculations and she contributed to the pioneering use of computers to complete tasks. Her work was central to the Project Mercury space flights, the start of the Space Shuttle programme and the production of plans for a mission to Mars.
